Demand For Cosmetic Work ‘Booming’

MELBOURNE FLORIDA – Despite the recession, or perhaps because of it, the anti-aging industry is enjoying a rebirth. Some Baby Boomers may feel that remaining young-looking is no longer a luxury, but rather a necessity.

According to a recent survey by the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, anti-aging procedures such as facelifts and eyelid lifts are on the rise, as are injections of Botox and fillers such as Juvederm.

Organizers of the Florida Anti-Aging and Healthy Living Expo at Florida Tech next month have seen strong interest from services that specialize in keeping Boomers – and those older – looking younger.

"Bookings for exhibition space is very strong in Brevard and around Central Florida," said Tom Palermo, president of the sponsor of the expo, Maverick Multimedia. "Because of Florida's compelling Baby Boomer population, we have booked exhibitors from as far away as Georgia, Maryland, Arizona, California and Missouri."

"The Baby Boomers are getting older, but they still feel young and they want to look that way, too," said Dr. Mark Berman, president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery.

By Ralph Zipper, MD

Cosmetic surgery has grown in popularity throughout the world; however, women remain hesitant to discuss their concerns about vaginal looseness, enlarged or irregular labia or loss of sexual satisfaction. Many women do not even realize there are surgical techniques to solve their problems.

After childbirth the vagina is stretched and does not return to its original size and shape. This condition, called vaginal relaxation, frequently leads to decreased feelings of friction and loss of sexual satisfaction by the patient.

FACIAL REJUVENATION

By Larry Bishop, MD

Anxiety over trying to figure out what gifts we can get for our spouses drives us crazy. If you’re like most of us, you won’t have a clue as to what your best friend and life companion wants. If you’re like most women, however, you have a great idea as to what you really want. So now is the time to bridge that great Mars-Venus divide.

Popular Year-round
From the realm of cosmetic dermatology, there are dozens of gift ideas that fit nearly every budget.  All of them are popular year-round, but especially around the holidays. And so, without further ado, here are a few modest suggestions to make gift selection a little happier and stress-free.

Botox is the number one cosmetic procedure in the United States.  Properly administered, it makes one look relaxed and rested without that “frozen” look. And who doesn’t want to look relaxed and happy while listening to Uncle Bob regale us for the fifteenth time about his moose hunting trip in 1962?

‘Mommy Makeovers’ Gain Popularity

COSMETIC SURGERY

By Robert Bashore, MD

“Mommy Makeovers” are not new – just the name and popularity are. People are living longer and healthier and we all want to look as good as we feel. Personally, having passed the 50 mark years ago, I can’t believe what time does to you.

When I get up in the morning, I’m not sure who that old guy is in the mirror. I sure don’t look like I feel, at least in my own mind. Time is not the only problem for women.

They have to deal with the multitude of changes that can occur after pregnancy. We all can’t go through pregnancy with personal trainers, life coaches, and live-in Nannies like the Hollywood stars can.

Pregnancy can result in weight gain with fatty bulges in places we never knew we had. Some other examples are sagging bellies with stretch marks and breast volume loss called post partum breast atrophy.

Neurostimulation Effective for Chronic Back Pain

PAIN MANAGEMENT

Spinal Cord Stimulation Approved By  Food and Drug Administration

BY STAN GOLOVC, MD

THE USE OF electrical stimulation to relieve pain began in ancient times with the placement of torpedo fish directly onto painful body parts. Since then, the application of electrical stimulation to the body for pain relief has become much more refined and sophisticated.

In 1989, spinal cord stimulation (SCS) was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a treatment for chronic pain. SCS has since become a standard of care for patients with neuropathic chronic back and limb pain (nerve injury with abnormal nerve function producing pain). New technology has allowed for the development of neurostimulators that can allow patients with chronic back pain to reduce or eliminate their need for pain medications and return to comfortable, productive lives.

‘Boomers’ Driven By Higher Expectations For Healthy Living

‘BOOMERITIS’

Q&A With Dr. Michelle Henderson

BABY BOOMERS are not like their parents or grandparents.  Being tired or suffering from a little bit of pain is not accepted as a natural part of aging.

“Boomers” are driven by higher expectations for healthy living and the means to be able to attain a healthier life style.

The good news is that more of us will be active and enjoying our later years.  But to meet the health challenges that come with that, we will need a greater focus on wellness and prevention, and new approaches to care delivery.

ELDER CARE

Dr. Rosemary Laird

Dr. Rosemary Laird

By Rosemary Laird, MD

AS LIFE EXPECTANCY in the U.S. continues to move higher, those over age 65 will grow dramatically over the next decade. The “oldest old,” those individuals age 85 or older, are the fastest growing segment of the population.

This group is breaking new ground, proving that the post-retirement years do not have to be a period of loss and inexorable decline. Indeed, quite the opposite is true. These later years provide powerful opportunities for continued growth — for affirming or reconsidering one’s priorities, taking on new challenges and exploring uncharted paths. In this second part of a two-part series, we’ll take a look at the major lifestyle factors you need to consider.

Poor Lifestyle Drives Increasing Need For Healthcare

BY DR. PETE WEISS

ARE YOU WORRIED about health care reform?  Dazed and confused by the complex legislative proposals in the House and Senate?  Concerned that the politicians won’t be able to get it right?  That perhaps they might even make the problems with health care worse?  Me too.  I think just about everyone is.  The future of our health care system has never seemed more uncertain.

It’s time to stop worrying about health care reform.  Unless you’re a Congressman, you personally aren’t going to be able to do much about it.  Me neither.  We can’t control what the Congress is going to do.

We can’t control what the President is going to do.  And, we’re not going to control what our doctors are going to do.  That’s the bad news.  The good news is that we can control what we do. What’s missing in this national health care debate is serious discussion about what individuals should be doing for themselves.

Let’s be honest.  A major factor in driving the increasing need for and increasing expense of health care in the United States is our collective lifestyle.
